The Trans Pennine Trail
A new venture for Pedal for Parkinson's.

For the past two years, Pedal for Parkinson's has focused its attention on going End to End to End Parkinson's Disease, Lands End to John O'Groats twice. So far we have had 100% success; everyone has completed the ride.  Nine out of nine End to Enders have completed the route and all the day riders have finished their day.Two riders have completed the E2E twice, organiser, David Greaves and fellow Parkie, Neil Manning.  Six of the nine rides were by Parkies.  In total,we have raised £45,000, but we are just scratching the surface. In 2009 just six Branches of the PDS, six end to enders and just over twenty day riders raised £35,000.  The Trans Pennine Trail will show the country that with Regional  co-operation and maximum involvement by Branches, raising money by Pedalling for Parkinson's, is  very  effective and simple way to raise funds for research into a cure.
The idea for the Trans Pennine ride came from the five day riders who represented the Barnsley Branch in 2009.  They were so enthused by their long distance ride that they immediately started to plan for an even longer trip for themselves for 2010.  With the energetic support of the Regional teams North west and Yorkshire and Humberside, this idea has grown into a combined West to East Regional event which will create a template for other regions in the future. Here is an INVITATION from George Spencer of the Barnsley Branch,  whose enthusiasm for the End to End and the Trans Pennine Trail, will help to get you on your bike.

Dear Branch Committee

Very Important Announcement

Combined Project – North West and Yorkshire & Humberside Regions

In an exciting new project, our two Regions are working together to introduce a simple but fun way to raise lots of money to help fund research into a cure for Parkinson’s.  The venture is being organised by Pedal for Parkinson’s, who have raised £45,000 for research in just two years using this fundraising technique.

This is how it works.  On the August Bank Holiday weekend, 28th to 31st, this year, starting on opposite coasts, two teams of riders will be cycling the Trans Pennine Trail, a 215 mile way-marked route which crosses the country through our two Regions: Southport, Altrincham, Pennistone, Selby, Hornsea, or the other way round.

We are not asking you to sponsor them or raise money in the Branch, no, all we are asking you to do is to find cyclists to join in the ride.  Each cyclist has a minimum sponsorship target of £200 and will ride for one, two, three or all of the days.  If each of the Branches found just one rider, we would generate at least £11,200.  If, like the Barnsley Branch last year, you could find 5 riders, we would raise at least £56,000.  In fact, during the Lands End to John O’Groats cycle ride last year, many of the day riders raised considerably more than £200 so a target of £60,000 would be realistic.

Where do you find the riders?  Among your family and friends, neighbours and work mates, sports clubs and businesses, fire service, armed forces – the list is endless.  Challenge them to ride 50 miles and raise £200.  But of course, the real challenge is to ask them to help us cure Parkinson’s.

The beauty of this way of raising money is that it takes the pressure off the Branch.  You don’t have to plan anything, organise anything or raise the money yourself.  Just find riders.  It’s that simple.  Riders can register at endtoendregistration@live.co.uk

Please help – together we can cure Parkinson’s.

Yours sincerely,

David Greaves
